Founded as a royal guard fortress by King Přemysl Otakar II of the Přemyslid dynasty in 1265, this historical site is among the oldest royal castles. The structure features a distinctive blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Empire architectural styles. It is the only castle of its kind that combines medieval elements with 19th-century influences.
The site includes a partially preserved palace and a bergfrit tower. Inside, exhibitions showcase 19th-century castle life and various historical artifacts. The castle grounds and impressive ruins are used for cultural displays and seasonal exhibitions.
Public access is provided through guided tours and historical events. The premises also offer accommodation and are the subject of numerous local ghost stories and legends.
