This historic quarter represents the original extent of the city prior to French colonial expansion. Following a major earthquake in 1755, the area was rebuilt by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah. The district is characterized by Moorish architecture, featuring ancient ramparts that once served as defensive walls, alongside former religious and administrative quarters.

Traditional markets define much of the neighborhood's character, including Souq al-Behaira and the Bazaar Street area. These markets offer a variety of traditional goods within the historic walled setting.

The neighborhood is also recognized as a significant stronghold for supporters of the Wydad Athletic Club. It remains an active residential and commercial area, preserving the historical urban fabric of the city.
