The complex is an extensive network of underground corridors, cellars and subcellars stretching nearly 27 km and reaching up to four levels deep. Dating from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, the passages were built for economic and storage purposes and formed an integral part of the town's fortification system; some sources also record uses as a torture chamber in later periods.
Engineering features include an underground water circulation system and the historic 'Jesuit aqueduct' for water supply. Approximately one kilometre of the catacombs is accessible as a route through the underground.
Multiple route types are presented: a classical route with medieval historical scenes, an adrenaline route involving crawling through narrow passages, wading through water and climbing ladders in darkness, and a newer route that explores a civil defence shelter dating from World War II and the Cold War.
