Built by the Spanish between 1888 and 1894, this Spanish Baroque church stands at the highest point of the area, overlooking the old port. The structure was erected on the site of a former 13th-century fortress and medieval Crusader citadel. Historical records indicate the site once hosted Napoleon Bonaparte.

The building is notable for its unique west-facing orientation toward the sea, a departure from traditional church alignments. Its interior contains decorations portraying episodes from the life of Saint Peter. Remnants of the original medieval fortifications are still visible on the grounds, and the church's distinct silhouette remains a prominent feature of the skyline.

As a significant Roman Catholic and Franciscan sanctuary, the church is open for visits and commemorates several biblical events. These include the raising of Tabitha (a woman restored to life by Peter) and the vision received by Saint Peter while staying at the house of Simon the Tanner (a local craftsman). It serves as a major pilgrimage site for those honoring the apostle's history.
