The complex served as the official residence of the Kings of Siam and later Thailand from 1782 until 1925. Established on June 10, 1782, it functioned as both a royal home and the center of government for the monarchy. While no longer the primary residence of the king, the site remains a working palace used for official state events, royal ceremonies, and significant religious functions.

Spanning an area of 244,000 square meters, the grounds consist of numerous buildings, halls, and courtyards. The structures showcase a combination of traditional Thai architecture and Western architecture styles. A central feature of the complex is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo), which serves as a significant place of worship and houses revered religious icons.

The site is open to the public and operates as a museum showcasing royal heritage and history. Due to its status as a major attraction, large crowds and queues are common. The complex is wheelchair accessible and contains various historical artifacts and architectural details across its multiple courtyards.
