Commerce Square

This expansive waterfront plaza is one of the largest squares in Europe and serves as a historical symbol of political power. Built on the site where the Royal Palace stood for over 200 years, the area features grand neoclassical architecture and a harbor-facing layout overlooking the river estuary. It is designated as a National Monument.

The center of the square is dominated by a bronze equestrian statue of King José I, who was the monarch of Portugal during the 18th century. On the northern side, the monumental Rua Augusta Arch stands as a prominent architectural landmark. The plaza is paved with traditional cobblestones and serves as a key public space.

The surrounding buildings house various restaurants and historical monuments. As a major cultural and transportation hub, the vast open space frequently hosts public events and shows. The site provides unobstructed views of the riverfront and the surrounding urban landscape.
