Constructed between 1406 and 1420, this complex is the largest and most complete ancient imperial sacrificial site in existence. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, emperors performed annual ceremonies here to pray for bumper harvests, grain, and rain. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture and landscape design.
The architectural design features unique Mingtang-style structures and is renowned for its significant role in Chinese cosmogony. Iconic buildings within the complex include the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Circular Mound Altar, and the Echo Wall. These structures are part of the Central Axis and represent the highest ethical level of imperial sacrificial architecture, set within expansive gardens and historic pine woods.
The complex is a national AAAAA-rated tourist attraction that integrates historical monuments with extensive parkland. It is open to the public and serves as a significant example of traditional Chinese ritual culture and garden design.
