Designed by architect Alexander Pomerantsev, this Neo-Byzantine cathedral was constructed between 1882 and 1924. It serves as the primary cathedral for the Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and is recognized as a National Monument. The building reaches a height of 53 meters and covers an area of 3,170 square meters.
The interior is characterized by its massive scale and ornate decoration, featuring a rich collection of frescoes and icons produced by renowned Russian and Bulgarian artists. The structure has the capacity to hold up to 5,000 people, making it one of the largest Eastern Orthodox church buildings in the world.
A significant feature is the crypt museum, which houses an extensive collection of Bulgarian icons spanning the 9th to the 18th century. As the largest Orthodox church on the Balkan Peninsula, the site functions as both a place of worship and a museum.
