Ameya-Yokocho

Local nameアメヤ横丁
LocationTokyo, Japan

This market, located near the Ueno train station, is a great place to get nearly anything, from fresh seafood to clothing, for very budget-friendly prices. It is also the place to go to if you want to experience the atmosphere of real Japan away from the main tourist centres.

Sprawling over an area of approximately 500 meters, the market sprang up after the Second World War, when it started out as a black market, where people could buy goods they needed (mostly anything that contained sugar). During these times, it was extremely hard to get in normal shops.

The street also offers a plethora of great restaurants and food stalls to pick from. They sell everything from ramen to pineapple pieces on a stick. If you see something you like and it seems too pricey for your liking, do not be afraid to bargain.

It can get really busy on weekend afternoons. If you wish to avoid the biggest crowds, come on one of the workdays around lunchtime.
