This area is one of Tokyo's newest and most expensive urban development projects. Centered around the 238-meters-tall Mori tower, it features dozens of shops, restaurants, cafés, movie theatres, a museum, a hotel, an outdoor amphitheatre, an observatory, and a few parks.
The district, likened to a city within a city, opened in 2003. Since then, it has managed to become one of the most prestigious addresses in Tokyo, with many leading IT companies having their offices here.
Although still relatively new, Roppongi Hills has already managed to attract its share of controversy, too. Many citizens of Tokyo have protested the demolition of the old neighbourhood that preceded its construction and there have also been complaints about its excessively complicated layout. When visiting, do not forget to equip yourself with a good map or a GPS, as the area is often compared to a maze.
