The famous Bastille prison which was stormed by the rebels in 1789 during the French revolution used to stand here. In the following years, it was completely taken apart and nowadays there are basically no traces of its existence left. Among the most famous people who were imprisoned here were e.g. Marquis de Sade or the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask.
Various cultural events and political demonstrations take place here. In the centre of the square, there is a column commemorating the French Revolution of 1830.
The "July Column“ has the names of people who died during the Revolution written on it in golden letters.
