This impressive neo-Renaissance basilica is the largest church in Berlin and also the center of the Protestant Church in Germany.
The current building was built on the site of a church from the 15th century. Wilhelm II had the church torn down in 1894 and the current cathedral was finished in 1905. It was heavily damaged during the WWII and reopened in 1993, although some of the restoration works continued until 2002.
Both the exterior and interior are richly decorated. Note the marble columns, beautiful stained glass windows and, most importantly, the large reconstructed Sauer organ with 7269 pipes and 113 registers. It is the largest late-Romantic organ preserved in its original condition.
The church contains a crypt with sarcophagi of Prussian royals, including Frederick I and his wife. It also houses a museum containing sketches and models depicting the history of designing of the cathedral.
You can climb to the top of the dome which offers striking views of the city. Audioguides are available in five languages.
