Established on August 1, 1844, this 35-hectare site is the oldest existing zoo in the country. The grounds maintain one of the world's most comprehensive collections, featuring over 20,200 animals from approximately 1,380 species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates.
The facility includes several specialized habitats and the largest aquarium in the country. It is currently the only location in the nation housing Giant Pandas and is one of only seven zoos in Europe to feature the species. The institution emphasizes its 180-year history and its ongoing commitment to global species conservation.
The site is open to the public as a destination for families and functions as a major center for wildlife. In 2024, it was recognized as the most-frequented zoo in Europe, recording an annual attendance of 3.6 million. Large crowds are frequently present, particularly during peak periods, due to its status as the most-attended zoo on the continent.
