Rome has a number of fascinating catacombs. After all, its history of building these underground cities of the dead dates all the way back to the ancient ages.
The catacombs at San Callisto rank among the oldest from their numbers. Named after one of the saints that lies buried in them, these catacombs are the final resting place of 16 popes, as well as several Christian martyrs.
