A 16th-century red-brick Roman Catholic church with an interesting history, located in a former business area.
It is said that when a small-holder in Trastevere was seriously ill and asked for help from the Virgin Mary, he got miraculously cured. As an act of gratitude, he put up an icon of her on his gate. It later grew into a small chapel, after people witnessed other miracles on the site. The chapel was built around the year 1488 and was a house to the new fraternity - Venerable Archbrotherhood of Santa Maria dell'Orto.
The church has an association with the Catholics of Japan in Rome. One night they were sailing and got into a storm. They all implored the Virgin of the church (which they previously visited) and got saved. Since then, they started celebrating this event together on the 8th of June by a mass.
You can get here from Trastevere tram station (line 8), or from Induno (trams 3 and 8).
Open all year round (except Jul and Aug):
Mon - Fri: 9 am - 1 pm
Sun and holidays: 10 am-noon
Masses during holidays start at 11 am.
Free admission.
