Church of São Roque

Local nameMuseu-Igreja de São Roque
LocationMisericórdia, Lisbon, Portugal

One of the earliest Jesuit churches in the world. Even though the exterior of this church is quite simple, its interior is elaborately decorated - it is a fusion of Mannerist and Baroque styles. It boasts eight splendid chapels and three altars. One of the highlights of this church is its painted ceiling. Be sure to look up and marvel at this display of scenes of the Apocalypse.

Religious collections can be found in the São Roque museum, adjacent to the church. It also houses 16th-century Portuguese paintings and two exquisite torch holders.

You can get here from the Rossio Train Station, or from Restauradores metro station (blue Azul line).
