Convent of San Francisco

Local nameSant Francesc
LocationPalma, Spain

The basilica was originally built in 1281, as ordered by James II of Majorca. It was later extended and in 1671, the whole front façade was rebuilt due to a lightning strike.

Notice the imposing sandstone wall, the amazing scale of the vaulted ceiling and the intricate carvings on the pillars. Inside the church, you will also find the tomb of Ramon Llul, a thirteenth-century mystic from Catalonia who went into hiding after trying to spread the word of the gospel to the Arab world. The convent is well worth a visit, it is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture on the island.
