Opened on July 15, 2006, this privately funded history museum focuses on the daily life and popular culture of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the former East German state. The permanent exhibition, titled "Everyday Life of a Past State at Your Fingertips", utilizes an experiential approach to preserve German cultural history. The institution was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award and examines both the positive and negative aspects of GDR society.
The museum is characterized by its interactive and hands-on displays. Notable features include a Trabi driving simulation and a recreated Plattenbau apartment complete with a furnished kitchen and living room. Original objects, clothing, and replica apartment cabinets are available for tactile exploration, providing an immersive look at the domestic environment of the era.
The space is designed to be family-friendly and is one of the most frequently visited museums. It aims to make history accessible to younger generations and remains open to the public daily throughout the year.
