Erawan Shrine

Built in 1956, this Hindu shrine is squeezed in between a large hotel and a shopping center. It's a popular tourist attraction especially for the Thai Classical Dance troupes that often perform here.

The shrine houses a famous statue of the four-faced Hindu god of creation, Lord Brahma. The four faces represent Brahma's virtues - kindness, mercy, sympathy and impartiality.

The statue was smashed to pieces with a hammer by a Thai man suffering from mental health illness in 2006. The restored statue was made of plaster mixed with precious metals and parts of the original piece. Another copy of the statue can be seen in the national museum.

The statue was damaged again in 2015 when a bomb exploded near the shrine, killing 22 people. However, the shrine has been repaired and it remains as popular as ever.
