Fushimi Inari-taisha

Local name伏見稲荷大社
LocationKyoto, Japan

This is the head of more than 30 thousand Inari shrines (the most numerous shrines) scattered all over Japan. It was established in 711 AD and was an important place of worship ever since. There are five lesser shrines located in the main building devoted to various deities. The locals still come here to pray today despite the fact that the place became an iconic Kyoto sight and is often crowded with tourists.

One of its best-known features are the red torii gates which can be found there in great numbers. Tourists often take pictures in the long torii gates tunnels.

In 2011, the Fushimi Inari-taisha celebrated 1300 years of its existence. There are many festivals and events organised there every year. Before you head there, be sure to check the official website to see which events take place during your visit.

Also, since the complex is rather large and there are many things to see (the buildings, the torii gates, the ever-present fox statues etc.), save at least half a day for the visit.
