Galata Bridge

Local nameGalata Köprüsü
LocationIstanbul

The iconic two-story bridge, which links two parts of Istanbul historically divided by both culture and faith, is a must-see.

Especially worth visiting at dusk or dawn, it offers great views onto the Golden Horn Bay way down to the Bosphorus.

The bridge as we can see it today is the fifth Galata bridge to be built. Nearly half a kilometre long, it was opened in 1994. Historical records tell us, however, that the first bridge in this area was already in place as early as the 6th century AD., when it was still under the rule of the Byzantine empire.

There are plenty of restaurants all around, on both sides of the bridge. If you wish to try out local food made out of freshly-caught fish, they are the place to eat at. Pay attention to the prices of the meals, though. Since the bridge is a major tourist attraction, there may be some places trying to take advantage of this and overprice food.
