Originally constructed in 1349 by the Genoese (merchants from the Republic of Genoa) as part of the Galata Walls, this Romanesque stone tower served as a defensive watchtower and the highest point in the city's fortifications. Throughout its history, the structure has fulfilled various roles, including a dungeon, a prison, a fire lookout station, and a coffeehouse. It was built in stages, with historical roots extending to the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) era.
The tower stands 62.59 meters tall and comprises nine stories. Following a major restoration in 2020, the building was converted into a museum and exhibition space. The interior displays a variety of artifacts documenting the city's history. The top floor features an observation deck providing 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding city.
The tower is open to the public and serves as a significant historical landmark and a prominent symbol of the city's skyline.
