Ha'penny Bridge

When in Dublin, take a walk on this lovely pedestrian bridge that stretches across the Liffey River. It was the first bridge to be built on this river, and it remained the only one for another 184 years. Today, it is estimated that more than 30 000 people cross it every day.

The bridge was constructed in 1816 and was one of the first iron bridges in the world. It replaced a ferry system that was in place before. In order for the former ferryman not to starve though, each Dubliner had to pay him half a penny for passing the newly-built bridge. Thus, the bridge got its name - Ha'penny Bridge.

If you are lucky when visiting, you will find the bridge beautifully decorated. This happens on various occasions, as it is a favourite place for locals to celebrate important anniversaries or for politicians to promote campaigns.
