The palace complex served as the primary winter residence for the Habsburg dynasty for over 600 years. Originally constructed as a medieval castle in the 13th century, the site evolved into a vast architectural ensemble that includes the Imperial Apartments, various chapels, and the Spanish Riding School. Since 1946, it has functioned as the official residence and workplace of the Austrian Federal President.
Notable sections of the complex include the Imperial Treasury, which contains the Austrian Imperial Crown and the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. The collection also features personal jewelry belonging to Empress Elisabeth, as well as legendary items such as a unicorn horn and the Holy Grail. The palace also houses the Sisi Museum, dedicated to the life of the Empress, and the Austrian National Library.
The architectural development of the site dates back to 1279, with significant contributions from architect Filiberto Lucchese in the Renaissance style. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the palace is a major historical landmark and museum hub. The complex is open to the public and serves as a significant cultural center.
