House of Livia

Local nameCasa di Livia
LocationCampitelli, Rome, Italy

This is the house of the first lady of ancient Rome - Livia. She was the wife of Emperor Augustus, the man who changed Roman republic into a monarchy. Definitely worth a visit for the beautifully preserved frescoes that decorate many of the rooms here.

The house, or villa, as the Romans would call it, was Livia's private abode. It was located at the top of one of the seven hills of Rome, the Palatine Hill, away from the private home of her husband, Augustus. The archaeologists first discovered it in 1839.
