This historical museum is the oldest of its kind in the entire country. A must-see for every history buff, it documents the history of Hungary from the prehistoric age till the modern era.
The museum has a number of permanent exhibitions on display, which explain the history of Hungary in a chronological fashion. Look forward to seeing a plethora of fascinating archaeological finds and historical mementos here - be it a 14 000 years old decorated moose ulna, or a beautiful rosetta necklace, that was all the rage amongst young women in the 19th century. There is also a separate exhibition devoted to the Hungarian royal mantle.
If you already know the permanent exhibitions by heart, no need to despair. Every few months there is a new temporary exhibition, so there is always something to look forward to. The topics of these exhibitions vary much more, too, so be prepared to learn more about anything from the ways of life of the Protestant community to the impact of Reformation on Christiandom.
Although the majority of the information in the museum is available in English, too, some remains in Hungarian only. If possible, bring a Hungarian friend to translate for you.
