The grand boulevard of Berlin was being built during most of the 1950s. Originally, it was named Große Frankfurter Straße but soon after its construction was finished, its name was changed to Stalinallee. The statue of Stalin was located there till 1961 when it was removed.
After the fall of communism, it was named Karl-Marx-Allee. Every once in a while changing the street name back to its original name is discussed.
The street is lined up with beautiful wedding-cake shaped high-rise blocks. Today, most of them house shops, restaurants or cafés. A peaceful stroll down the Karl-Marx-Allee (bordered by the Frankfurter Tor on one side and Strausberger Platz on the other) is a very pleasant one and the boulevard itself is definitely worth seeing.
