The impressive fortress is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Europe. It was built in 1663 as a fortress and since the 19th century, it had been used as a prison. It is located close to the popular Little Mermaid statue. The complex is quite large so be sure to save enough time to see all the things you want to see.
Even though the buildings inside the Citadel are used as military barracks and offices, now that the time of wars is over, it serves mainly as a pleasant park where you can enjoy a walk on the ramparts.
