What used to be a prison from 1796 to 1924, now houses exhibitions on political history. In the past, the prison was notable as it witnessed executions of many Irish revolutionaries. One of the highlights of the museum surely is the Proclamation of the Irish Republic.
In addition, this place is now a part of popular culture. It has been featured in various films, TV series and it was also the set of U2's music video to "A Celebration".
This museum is quite popular and thus busy, so be sure to book your tickets in advance.
The nearest tram stop in Suir Road. If you come here by car, you can park it near Irish Museum of Modern Art, as Kilmainham Gaol does not have any parking spaces.
