The construction of this library was started by Michelangelo in 1525. After he left the city, architects Tribolo, Vasari, and Ammannati continued in his work.

Designed in a Mannerist style, the historic library consists of a vestibule and a reading room. It contains manuscripts and early printed books, most of them belonging to the private collection of the Medici family.
