Madrid's central square is dominated by a bronze statue of King Philip III, dating back to 1616. What once used to serve as an execution place and a bull-fighting arena, is now a site of many events throughout the year, such as concerts, games and festivals.
This popular meeting place is lined with cafés and restaurants that offer a beautiful view of the square. Here, you can taste one of Madrid's culinary specialty - a calamari sandwich. However, be prepared that the restaurants are usually quite expensive.
Plaza Mayor is located only a few minutes' walk from Puerta del Sol and San Miguel Market.
