One of the most popular and best lookouts with stunning views of Florence. The large square was built in 1869 by Florentine architect Giuseppe Poggi in the neoclassical style during the urban renewal of Florence.
Dedicated to the Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti, the square features a bronze replica of the statue of David. A hillside building with a loggia was added by Poggi after the terrace was finished. Originally, it was supposed to house a museum of works by Michelangelo but the museum never opened and it's now occupied by the Ristorante La Loggia. The restaurant offers great Tuscan cuisine and panoramic views.
The square is located on the hill and you can walk up to it from Piazza Poggi. You can also take one of the historic panoramic routes - either from Piazza Ferruccio or from the Porta San Miniato. It can also be accessed by buses 12 or 13.
