This steel suspension bridge, designed by Norman Foster, opened on June 10, 2000, as the first new bridge across the Thames in over a century. Shortly after opening, the structure gained the nickname the Wobbly Bridge due to unexpected swaying caused by synchronous lateral excitation. Following the installation of a damping system and two years of strengthening work, it reopened in 2002.
The bridge serves as a direct pedestrian link between the City of London and Bankside, specifically connecting St Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern. Its modern architectural design provides unobstructed views of the cathedral and the surrounding riverfront. The structure is wheelchair accessible.
Beyond its architectural function, the bridge has served as a filming location, most notably appearing in the Harry Potter film series. It connects the historic City of London with the contemporary cultural scene of the Southbank.
