The enormous white marble Altar of the Fatherland commemorates the first king of unified Italy – Victor Emmanuel II. It is also one of the largest and tallest buildings in Rome. It houses the Museum of the Risorgimento and there is also the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (together with an Eternal Flame).
You can get to the roof of the structure by lift (but there is a fee) and from there you can admire the whole city of Rome. Apart from the imposing view of the city, you can see the two gigantic statues of goddess Victoria on chariots up close. There is also an equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel himself located in front of the building.
Apart from the lifts to the roof, the complex is admission free.
