Housed in the Palau Nacional, a historic building designed by architect Eugeni Pere Cendoya for the 1929 International Exposition, this institution was established as a museum in 1934. The site is a designated National Monument and covers 45,000 square meters. The architecture is defined by its grand scale and prominent central dome.

The museum holds the most significant collection of Catalan art in the world, spanning from the 11th to the mid-20th centuries. It is particularly renowned for its Romanesque mural paintings, considered one of the most comprehensive collections of its kind globally. The galleries also display extensive Gothic art, European Renaissance and Baroque works, and a major collection of Catalan Modernism.

Specific highlights include works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Francisco Goya, Antoni Gaudi, Peter Paul Rubens, El Greco, Paul Cezanne, and Titian. The museum also maintains a significant numismatic collection and a photography department. The facility is open to the public and is wheelchair accessible.
