Originally commissioned by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and later rebuilt by the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century, this structure was initially a temple dedicated to all gods. In 609 AD, it was consecrated as a Catholic church, the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres, which contributed to its status as one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings due to continuous use. The architect Apollodorus of Damascus is associated with its design, which serves as a primary example of ancient Roman architecture.

The building is characterized by a massive unreinforced concrete dome, which remained the largest in the world for over 1,700 years. At the center of the dome is a central oculus, an opening that works alongside an ingenious drainage system integrated into the floor. The structure reaches a height of 43.3 meters and covers an area of approximately 2,000 square meters.

Currently functioning as both a place of worship and a state museum, the interior houses the tombs of Italian kings and other notable historical figures. It is the most visited state museum in Italy and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is open to the public and is wheelchair accessible, with guided tours and audio guides available.
