Pyramid of Cestius

Local namePiramide di Caio Cestio
LocationTestaccio, Rome, Italy

If someone told you that he has entered a pyramid whilst visiting the city of Rome, would you have believed him? Now you have a chance to see it yourself. The Pyramid of Cestius is a monumental pyramid, built over 2,000 years ago by a Roman nobleman Gaius Cestius. It was made accessible to the public for the first time ever in 2015.

This pyramid is 37 metres tall and nearly 30 square metres large. It used to be covered in marble. Thanks to the great state of preservation of the pyramid, visitors can even enter the burial chamber, which is concealed inside, still boasting beautiful ancient decor and frescos. Unfortunately, not much remains of the grave goods that the chamber had probably been equipped with, as it had already fallen victim to grave robbers sometime during antiquity.

The easiest way to reach the pyramid is to take the subway and exit at the conveniently named Piramide station.
