This huge, imposing fort was built in the 17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Characteristic due to the red sandstone used in its construction, the fort is one of the jewels of Mughal architecture. It is listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites since 2007.
Inside, the fort boasts breath-taking pavilions with intricate marble decorations, as well as the famous Pearl Mosque. No wonder, since it had served as the centre of the entire empire's administration for nearly two centuries, after the emperor moved his court from Agra here, to Delhi.
