During Roman times, this square was large and surrounded by Ionic columns. Also called Roman Market, this place used to be the central market of ancient Athens. Notable is the monumental Gate of Athena Archegetis, which served as an entrance to the market.
The surrounding area has recently become a popular dining destination, offering traditional Greek cuisine.
