Built in the 15th century, the palace served as a residence for the Rucellais, a wealthy merchant family at the time. It was designed by Leon Battista Alberti, a notable humanist and architect, who promoted a new humanistic theory of art.
Supposedly, Leon Battista Alberti was inspired by ancient Rome architecture when designing the residence, because the structure resembles the Colosseum and some of its features are used solely for ornamental purposes. This distinguishes this palace from the other 15th-century residences built in Florence.
