What once used to be a site for various protests and debates is now a popular spot for sightseeing and relaxing. It serves as a meeting place for both locals and tourists.
This is the place where French citizens started a riot against the occupying Nazis and also where students started an uprising in 1968 that got so massive, the authorities were concerned it might grow into a civil war. The uprisings led to the fall of De Gaulle's government.
The most popular part of the square is the fountain with its sculpture of Saint Michael fighting virtues.
The location of the square is perfect for when you need to rest after observing all the attractions nearby. You can get here by metro line 4, station Saint-Michel - Notre-Dame.
