Built by Emperor Hadrian in 134 AD, this marble bridge has served to provide safe passage across the Tiber to weary travellers for nearly 2 millennia now.
Although its ancient history was more or less forgotten during the Middle Ages, you can still admire the arches on the bridge, made in typically Roman fashion.
Note the beautifully decorated statues of ten angels, which can be seen gracing the bridge in twos. They were created by some of the greatest sculptors of the day, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini. See his Angel with the Crown of Thorns.
