Embark on your journey to Staten Island from this ferry. It operates daily, carrying approximately 70,000 passengers every day. It is completely free and you can admire the views of the Lower Manhattan, Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty from the swaying deck of the ferry.
Although the terminal only officially opened at the beginning of 20th century, travelling by ferry has a much longer history here. It is said that the ferries have been here as early as the early 18th century. In 2005, the terminal has undergone a reconstruction. It now serves as a multipurpose transportation centre, with bus and subway stops being served here along the boats.
There's a shopping mall at the dock with many shops and restaurants to shorten the waiting time. Be sure to visit the entry hall - it offers beautiful aerial views of the harbour and downtown Manhattan.
The cruise itself lasts for about 25 minutes. Do keep in mind though, that although this ferry does pass the Statue of Liberty on its way, it does not actually make a stop at Ellis Island.
The ferry runs 24/7, every 15-20 minutes in the morning and afternoon peak hours, with 30 minutes service to follow. During the weekend ferry goes every 30 minutes.
Be sure to check the official website for exact schedule. (One trip takes about 25 min.)
The ferry is free.
