Statue of Saint Wenceslas

Local namePomník svatého Václava
LocationNew Town, Prague, Czechia

This equestrian statue of St. Wenceslas, patron saint of the Czech Republic, serves as a popular meeting point. The sculpture was created by J. Myslbek in 1887 and placed at the southern end of Wenceslas Square in 1924. Note that St. Wenceslas is accompanied by four figures, depicting other Czech saints: Saint Ludmila, Saint Prokop, Saint Agnes of Bohemia, and Saint Adalbert of Prague. In 1918, this statue witnessed the birth of Czechoslovakia and the precise date can be found in front of the base.

The inscription on the base of the sculpture contains a prayer to St. Wenceslas: "Saint Wenceslas, duke of the Czech land, Prince of ours, do not let us nor our descendants perish."
