This important pilgrimage site situated on a rock formation is a total must see. It was built in the 16th century in order to worship Balinese sea gods.
The sanctuary is said to be guarded by dangerous sea snakes and you can cross a pathway to see their dwelling if the waves allow it. The surrounding fountain serves as the source of holy water.
As it's a popular tourist attraction, all the shops with souvenirs created a commercialised area out of the surrounding grounds. Nevertheless, this place is still magical and definitely worth visiting, especially when you arrive just in time to see the smashing sunset.
