The neo-gothic building (built in 1883) located on the Rathausplatz, is the heart of Viennese political life. It is the seat of Vienna Mayor and also an important place where the public events are organised.
It also houses a restaurant where you can taste some traditional Viennese dishes (e.g the Viennese Schnitzel or the Apple strudel).
There is no entrance fee into the building and there are free guided tours organised (though only in German). You can also opt for a free multilingual audio guide.
During the Christmas period, there are Christmas markets situated in front of the City Hall. Usually, there is also a skating rink though it is often crowded. The whole area is lit up, beautifully decorated and the holiday atmosphere is ever-present.
Guided tours in German:
Mon, Wed, Fri: 1 pm (except council meeting days and public holidays)
Audio guides in English, French, Italian and Spanish are available for free (only available for the guided tours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1pm)
Guided tours are free of charge.
