The touching memorial originally (in 1982, when it was installed) consisted of only the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Later on, two more were added – Three Servicemen Memorial (with three figures intentionally designed as belonging to three different races) and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial (commemorating mainly the nurses but also all other women who took part in the Vietnam War as well).
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is covered in inscriptions of the names of those who were either killed in action (indicated with a diamond icon) or missing in action (indicated with a cross icon). The names are ordered chronologically. The visitors sometimes put a piece of paper over the name that is important to them and then rub it with a pencil to create a memento for themselves.
The memorial is open to public 24/7 and there are no admission fees.
Rangers are on duty to answer questions from 9:30 am to 10:00 pm daily and to provide interpretive programs throughout the day and upon request.
Admission to the memorial is free.
