Historic Monuments and Memorials

Duke of Wellington Monument

Erected in 1819 within the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, this marble bust commemorates the 1st Duke of Wellington. It stands on a Roman column brought from the ruins of Lepida in Libya.

The Eliott Memorial

Located in the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, this monument honors George Augustus Eliott, the Governor who successfully defended Gibraltar during the Great Siege of 1779–1783.

Mercado de Abastos de Algeciras

Designed by engineer Eduardo Torroja in 1933, this rationalist landmark features a pioneering reinforced concrete dome spanning 47.8 meters without internal supports. It serves as Algeciras' central food market.

Torre de San Garcia

Ruins of a 16th-century coastal watchtower once used to detect pirate raids. It formed part of the Bay of Algeciras' defensive network before being destroyed in the 19th century.

Torre de la Almiranta

A 16th-century coastal defense tower used for surveillance and signaling. It is one of several watchtowers built to protect the Andalusian coastline from North African corsairs.

Paco de Lucía

Francisco Gustavo Sánchez Gómez, known as Paco de Lucía, was a Spanish virtuoso flamenco guitarist, composer, and record producer.

Gibraltar: Cradle of History

A bronze sculpture depicting the diverse historical eras of Gibraltar, from prehistoric times to the modern age, located near the entrance to the territory.

Cross of Sacrifice

A Commonwealth war memorial at the North Front Cemetery. Carved from Cornish granite, it honors the soldiers of the British Empire who died in both World Wars.
