Hustopeče

Localidad · Región de Moravia Meridional, 🇨🇿 Chequia

Hustopeče is a small wine town in South Moravia, about 30 km south of Brno. It is best known for its almond orchards. Almond trees are rare this far north, and in early spring the hills above the town turn pink and white with blossom.

The town suits a relaxed day or a short wine-country stay. Expect a compact historic square, family wine cellars, gentle walks through orchards and vineyards, and easy access to the wider South Moravian wine region. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia, went to school here as a boy.

Cuándo viajar

Spring and early autumn are the best times to visit. Late March and April bring almond blossom and mild days. Summers are warm and dry, which suits walking and wine tasting in the evening. Winters are cold and quiet, and many cellars keep shorter hours.

The big event is the Almond and Wine Festival (Slavnosti mandloní a vína), held on a weekend in March when the orchards bloom. It combines walks to the orchards, local wine, almond food and live music. Book accommodation early for that weekend.

Lugares destacados

  • Rozhledna Hustopeče is a wooden lookout tower in the almond orchard on the hill above town. It opened in 2012. From the top you can see the Pálava hills and, on clear days, the Alps.
  • The almond orchards on the Starý vrch and Kamenec hills hold several hundred trees. A marked almond nature trail links them with the town. The full loop is almost 9 km, and a shorter 5 km option exists.
  • Kostel svatého Václava a svaté Anežky České is one of the first churches built in the Czech Republic after 1989 (1992–1994). Its unusual spiral plan replaced a Gothic church whose tower collapsed in 1961.
  • The main square, Dukelské náměstí, is lined with old burgher houses, a plague column and the town hall. It is the natural starting point for a walk.
  • The Town Museum and Gallery occupies the Renaissance house U Synků from 1579, with an arcaded courtyard. Exhibits cover town history, local wine making and the old markets.
  • TGM is a memorial to Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, who studied in Hustopeče in 1861–1863. A 2 km educational trail with seven stops follows places linked to his school years.

Qué experimentar

Hustopeče is about almonds and wine, and the best experiences combine both.

  • Walk the almond trail in blossom: in late March or April, follow the marked trail through the flowering orchards to Rozhledna Hustopeče.
  • Visit a family wine cellar: many small winemakers open their cellars for tastings, especially on weekends. Look for signs saying sklep or vinotéka.
  • Join a harvest-time wine event: in September and October the region celebrates the new wine, and young wine called burčák is sold everywhere.
  • Cycle between wine villages: rent a bike and ride the vineyard routes to Velké Pavlovice or Kurdějov, stopping for a glass on the way.

Gastronomía

Local food is Moravian: roast meats, dumplings, soups and seasonal game, served with local white wines such as Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner and Pálava. The Velké Pavlovice wine subregion around the town is also known for its red wines.

The local specialty is almonds. Mandlárna is a family shop and café selling almond sweets, almond beer and the almond liqueur Mandlovka. For meals, look around Dukelské náměstí and the streets off the square, where most restaurants and wine bars are.

Seguridad y salud

Hustopeče is a very safe small town. Petty crime is rare. The main practical risks are drinking too much at tastings and cycling on narrow roads after dark. In summer, bring water and sun protection for walks through the open orchards and vineyards. Tap water is safe to drink.

Historia

Hustopeče was first recorded in 1247 and became a town in 1572. It grew rich from wine and from its markets on the Hungarian Road, an old cattle-trading route, as the Renaissance houses on the square still show. Until 1945 most residents spoke German, and the town was called Auspitz.

The young Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk studied at the local school in 1861–1863; TGM and a short trail recall his time here. In 1961 the tower of the old Gothic church collapsed, and the ruin was later demolished. Only after 1989 could the town build Kostel svatého Václava a svaté Anežky České, finished in 1994 on the old site.
