Historic Icelandic Churches

A Vidimyri Turf Church
A beautiful staple of old Icelandic architecture. Services are still held here, but you can always just take a look around the church.
B Thingvellir Church
This church dates back to the 11th century. See the collection of old bells here and the cemetery, where two poets are buried.
C Grafarkirkja
Iceland's oldest turf church, dating back to the late 17th century. It features original ornate wood carvings and traditional sod-wall construction.
D Ingjaldshólskirkja
A concrete church built in 1903 on the site of an older medieval structure. It is historically linked to legends of Christopher Columbus visiting the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

A small wooden church in the Westfjords, built in 1939 to serve the remote community of Bitrufjörður.
F Seyðisfjardarkirkja
Known for its distinctive blue exterior and the rainbow-painted path leading to its entrance. The wooden structure was moved from Dvergasteinn to its current location in 1922.
G Víkurkirkja
A prominent red-roofed wooden church completed in 1934. It sits on a hill overlooking the village of Vík and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
Útskálakirkja
A wooden church consecrated in 1863 on the Reykjanes Peninsula. It contains a historic pulpit and serves one of the region's oldest parishes.
I Reyniskirkja
A small wooden church built in 1929, located near the famous Reynisfjara black sand beach.
J Þingeyrarklausturskirkja
Built in 1877 from local basalt stone, this church stands on the site of one of Iceland’s first Benedictine monasteries, originally founded in 1133.
K Blönduóskirkja
A striking example of modern Icelandic architecture, this 1993 concrete church was designed by Maggi Jónsson to mimic the shape of a volcanic crater.
Akraneskirkja
Consecrated in 1896, this is one of the oldest concrete churches in Iceland, featuring a traditional cruciform layout.
Hólmavíkurkirkja
A modern concrete church consecrated in 1968, positioned on a hill with views over the Hólmavík harbor and Steingrímsfjörður.
